Parenting on Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve:  Wow it’s finally here.  All the preparations have been made.  The party can begin, right?  Well, maybe it can but there is always some fear and trembling when you have a child with learning differences.  This is especially true if your child has deficits in the social and emotional area.  How can it go smoother.

First of all, if you will  be attending a Christmas Eve Service at a church, have a plan.  On Tuesday, I did a post on a possible social story for your child to prepare for this special church service.  If it’s at a relatives church, get as much information as you can ahead of time so you can prepare your child(ren).

Will there be dinner with relatives with opening of presents on Christmas Eve?  If so, will it be at your house or at someone elses?  You can control the schedule if it’s at your house but you will not be able to do that at someone else’s home.  On Monday, December 23, I will have a post on getting information about the schedule at the Christmas/Christmas Eve gathering from the host.
This is so important.  It helps you to be mentally prepared for what is going to happen.  This helps you to prepare your child for what will happen.

Remember, you may need to ask for a room set aside at the hosts house so your child can nap, relax or just get away from the over stimulating environment that is a part of a Christmas celebration.  Stay tuned for more helps for the celebration on Monday!
