Holidays This Week

This is one of the most diverse weeks of the year when it comes to holidays. I have not 11. written on any of these before. As a family, we did not participate in any of these very much.

Halloween is thought to have its roots with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.

In the last few years, many families have chosen to take their children to community organizations fall festivals rather than neighborhood trick or treating. This trend began due to safety issues and parents had greater confidence in the accountability that was in place to make sure children stayed safe. Some families participate in both. Our family went to our church's fall festival as it was safe, well staffed, and warm (since the Midwest is often cold by Halloween.

In the last 5 years, many families affected by food allergies have joined a national movement known as the teal pumpkin. If a family wants to offer fun non food treats it let's others know by placing a teal pumpkin by its front door. I noticed my grocery store had teal pumpkins for sale this year. In years past, I have painted a pumpkin teal.

Reformation Day is a religious holiday celebrated on October 31 in remembrance of the Reformation. On 31 October 1517, Martin Luther, a Roman Catholic priest in Germany, wrote to his Arch Bishop protesting against the sale of indulgences. He enclosed in his letter a copy of his "Disputation of Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," which became known as The 95 Thesis. This was the event which protestant churches trace their beginnings. It is celebrated among various Protestants, especially by Lutheran and Reformed churches.American churches often transfer the holiday, so that it falls on the Sunday (Reformation Sunday) on or before October 31.

Century Old Wisdom on Columbus Day

On this Columbus Day, it's good to remember a few words from the famous explorer. These can apply to most of the hard things we are called to persevere.

This advice is applicable to any life situation. For me, I find it particularly pertinate to my life as a special needs mom seeking to help my child to become all that God desires for him to become!

Freedom Has a Cost!

Freedom is not Free. Recently I went to Washington D.C. I saw many war memorials. At some of them, the names of those who lost life were listed. One thing that surprised me was all the smaller conflicts of war our country has been involved. Some in my life time. I had forgotten about many but whether big or small, long ago or recent, it was war. There is always sacrifice and today, on Memorial Day, it's a small amount of time to reflect on a great amount of heroic service,

Thank you this Memorial Day for the sacrifice made for freedom!

Courage

I think I am always inspired by a quote of courage and vision when it is said by a person who has had big hurdles to overcome.

Bethany Hamilton is one of those people. She was a champion surfer who at the age of 13 was attacked by a shark. She lost an arm in the process. As I was reading the account of the attack, she said that her biggest concern after the attack was that she would be able to surf again. Her love of surfing helped her overcome her fear of sharks. The movie Soul Surfer is the story of this incident and her life after the attack. Check it out if you want to know more!

Hope

I couldn't say it any better. I will add a scripture verse of hope.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 NIV

God Knows Your Circumstances

Several years ago I attended a conference listening to Nick Vujicic. I was moved so deeply by this man's presentation. He was born without arms and legs. He has suffered loneliness and depression but refused to allow these circumstances to define him. He has lived these words. Be encouraged, no matter what you are facing!

Is life Beyond Your Control?

In reality, life is always beyond my control. The more I try, the more it does 't work. Author, Joni Eareckson Tada, knows this well as she has faced off disability since a diving accident several decades ago. She shares her insight from knowledge of scripture, suffering and experience. No matter what your personal challenge is, this is good advice!

Churchhill's Christmas Advice, 1941

On December 24, 1941, Winston Churchhill shared A Christmas address to the British people during the heart of World War II. He added a small section where he encouraged parents to take time away from the concerns of the day and invest in a special time with their children on Christmas.

Let the children have their night of fun and laughter. Let the gifts of Father Christmas delight their play. Let us grown-ups share to the full in their unstinted pleasures before we turn again to the stern task and the formidable years that lie before us, resolved that, by our sacrifice and daring, these same children shall not be robbed of their inheritance or denied their right to live in a free and decent world.

And so, in God's mercy, a happy Christmas to you all.

This is such a great reminder of the scripture verse, in John.

"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Jesus has overcome the world and understanding that fact enables us to "take time off from our troubles. The troubles will be there but this moment in time with our children will be gone if it isn't embraced. Allow your children to worship the Lord and enjoy Christmas. They will be able to do both, if their parents lead the way!

Play: Fountain Of Youth?

Children bring youth and energy to adults. Also , they distress adults. Honest, give it a try! Children and play allow adults into a carefree world that is a reprieve from daily life. Besides that everyone is building a relationship that is so important! Everyone needs human connection, no matter what age!

Look at Me!

As a parent, how many times have you heard this? Probably thousands unless you have a child that doesn't connect with others relationally. This child has to be taught to connect. It may be hard work playing with a child with social or communication difficulties. It will be worth all the hard work when they want to share a "look at me" moment with you!
