Clothes: Limiting Meltdowns

Clothing Tips: Creating Independence

If you have a child that has weak fine motor skills or sensory sensitivities, you

have probably experienced more than a few meltdowns with dressing. I know that assisting your child is easier than tantrums but not a great long term solution. Here are a few things that worked at my house.

1. Practice self help skills such as tying shoes, putting on coats, zippers, buttoning, snaps. Work on them regularly and in the amount your child can tolerate. It's better to tackle this by practicing a lot but in short sessions.

2. Ask other mothers specific questions on things they have found helpful. Moms are the experts when it comes to what works.

3. Look on online at articles on life skills to get ideas.

4. Accommodate, accommodate, accommodate! I found jeans at the GAP that had a hook closure that was so easy to do. Use Velcro closures. Teach the bunny ears shoe tying method. The socks at StrideRite had hand sewn seams that didn't irritate. Sweat pants are an awesome alternative.

5. Don't forget that accommodating beats a meltdown every time. One last thing, make sure you cut out tags from clothing. Also, take your child's lead when it comes to fabrics that feel good (and not)--it will make everyone happier.

Please share anything that has worked for you.
