The end of the school year brings lots of things that are a little different. My son never did “different” very well. He coped very well with the normal everyday routine. Those extra special events in May were quite difficult. Here are a few things to help make your child a little more comfortable with all the changes that occur at school in May.
1. Ask the teacher for a schedule of anything that will be special. Be specific. I have found that little changes don’t make that list. That may be fine in February but in May, a tiny change may be what sets off a meltdown. Why? Your child has dealt with a school program, piano recital and a field trip already this week. Am I speaking your language? You know exactly what I’m talking about.
2. Volunteer at many of the events, if possible. Your presence will help your child. You will be able to attend to the stress and anxiety he/she may be feeling.
3. Go over the schedule, in advance, and many times for each change that will be occurring.
4. Pray!!! Pray for God to help you anticipate all the things that will cause stress for your child and accommodate them. Pray that others will be understanding toward your child. Pray for your child to handle these well. Pray for yourself to manage the next month of your life without a meltdown.
5. KEEP YOUR SENSE OF HUMOR!!!
Remember, May will be a distant memory. Try to enjoy it amid the moments of stress!
