He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.
Ecclesiastes' author is drawing some final conclusions to all that has been said. Up to this point, he has shown that God has a time for everything. He ordains a time for things that are so opposite, but all within his sovereign will. There isn't just a time for everything but everything is made beautiful in its time. as we try to wrap our minds around this, let's stop and take a look at what time is in God's eyes.
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. II Peter 3:8
God views time in a different way. He is concerned with our daily existence which is definitely in time. He asks us to also focus on a day that's coming. It will be a glorious day of the return of Christ. It is a time we need to be looking forward to.
10 on the day he comes to be glorified in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you. 2 Thessalonians 1:10
Of course, we must live in the here and now and have focus on what is happening in the current time but we also have to be setting our our hearts, eyes and minds toward the DAY of Christ's return. As we focus on that Day, he sets eternity in our hearts. We will be focused on eternity and will begin to fathom the greatness of God and his works from the beginning of time. We won't fully get it but our focus will be as God would have it. We are to be fully engaged in the world as a missionary to this place while having a focus that is looking forward to to our eternal home.
How about a hallelujah!
