Ecclesiastes 3 takes a turn from looking at all the opposites of life that God ordains to trying to pull it all together. We have learned there is a time for beginnings and endings. There is a time to express many differing emotions. There are times in work and relationships to to build and other times to let go or tear down. There is time for silence and time for joyous expression. Ecclesiastes 3 covers about everything that a person thinks, feels and does in life. It reminds the reader that God has designed perfect times for all of these.
Now the question is asked, in light of these appointed times in life, what gain does the worker have from his work? First, he has experienced all or most of the opposites that have been listed. He has had to do these things at one time or another in his work? The author is asking a real question. Is there any significance in doing all of these things?
The author shares what he has observed over time. He has seen God in all of this business. When God is a part of something there is significance. This work was given to people by God. It was given. It was a gift for God's people to show that work and life has significance when God is a part of it. Work and life is just stuff and time but when God is in it , it becomes significant as it is a place for each person to see God at work.
Isn't that encouraging to know that God gives significance to our lives in the things he gives each person to fulfill?
