Special Needs Parenting: A Mom's Mental Health

I once heard it said, "If a mom's children are doing ok, the mom is doing ok." The real translation is: mom's are happy people if their children are thriving. Well, what happens when the children are not thriving? That is often the case in special needs parenting. It could look several different ways.

  • Mom is an angry person and all her relationships suffer because of it.
  • Mom is depressed and it comes out with her trying escape her circumstances through both destructive and positive pursuits.
  • Mom is so stressed that she develops obvious mental health issues.
  • Mom becomes a worker for her child. She feels that if she works harder they can "beat this."
  • She recognizes the stress and learns healthy coping strategies
  • She learns to live above her circumstances with long haul perspective.

We will look at each of these mom responses in the next few weeks. I would love to hear from others about anything I am overlooking.
