Stay on Schedule!

Schedules are great. They are important for everyone but especially for young children and those with learning differences. Holidays are hard for most people. One reason is that most families schedule is non existent during all the extended family get togethers. These children struggle behaviorally with all the stimulation, change and lack of schedule. Schedules help a person predict what is coming. If a child doesn't understand what to expect next then anxiety is heightened. That anxiety is counteracted by rigid or acting out behaviors. That is why a schedule helps a child handle life better.

There is no need to feel guilty about the lack of schedule that your children (and you) have had. It's just Important to get back on a schedule. It may take some discipline on your part to make this happen on a vacation week. There is no better time than today to get back to a schedule. Your family is likely to adjust better to school if everyone is on a schedule before the semester begins.

Let me know if your children are less stressed and more compliant after you return to a schedule. It may also help to have the schedule visually displayed for a few days to help your children "see" the schedule.
