Don't Compare

Do you remember writing an essay to compare and contrast characters in a book? That may be a great way to analyze a piece of literature but not your life. Life and the joys and challenges that come are unique with you and every other person planet earth! Comparing the challenges you have to another is like putting apples against oranges. There just isn't a way to measure in this comparison game.

Ok, life can be hard when parenting a child with learning differences. It doesn't help to compare struggles to others. GOT IT! Well, comparison often goes much farther than life circumstances and parenting. It can involve, parents, in-laws, another house or car. It could be how you look (weight, hair, clothes). There are personality difference to be compared like bubbly. Introverted or reflective. There are accomplishments and abilities. There is comparison of time, "if I could have a nanny, I could do ________. "

What harm does comparison do?

  • It causes an ungrateful spirit.
  • It can cause depression.
  • It is a focus on "me" and everything that's not right in my life.
  • It makes an unhappy wife, mother, friend, daughter.
  • It creates jealousy.
  • It can make a person angry and no fun to be around.
  • It is unhealthy for relationships.

Life can be hard but it will be better if you resist the temptation to compare your life to another who looks like she has a perfect life. I can assure you that she does not. Don't fall for it, you will be the one who suffers the most from the comparison.
