Friend Who "Gets it"

Many years ago after my son's diagnosis on the autism spectrum, I learned an important lesson. This lesson was that relationships change with parenting a child with learning differences. Here are some of those changes that often happen.

1. Some good friends don't know what to do or say when they find out that your child has a disability or learning difference.

2. They may not say anything or avoid the subject because it is so uncomfortable

3. The friends you thought would walk with you in this, don't. It really hurts.

So what now?

There are people who will walk with you. It takes time to connect with them. They may be people you already know but never thought of as the ones who would take this journey with you. As you connect with women who have been walking this path longer than you, relationships will form. Both groups, those who have similar lives and those who have a heart to help, will be the friends that "get it." Finding friends who understand your life or who want to learn "get it." You will be encouraged by these new friends!
