Prepare, Prepare, Prepare. That is my number 1 rule of parenting a child
on the autism spectrum. How! Rehearse what will happen in public/social
situations. Explain what will happen at school, church, health care providers,
grandparent’s house, birthday party.
Explain, roleplay, read books, write social stories, have siblings
help. Whatever you can do to prepare
your child for anything that has elements that are not always predictable, do
it.
A few helpful hints
1.Explain the scenario (include as many details as you can
think)
2.Share what to do if the
plan changes (if it snows, we will do……instead of …..
3.Share: SOMETIMES THE PLAN CHANGES
4.Give him the plan in a
visual format
5.Check for understanding by
asking him questions
These
steps won’t ensure success. The likelihood
is much greater, though.
