Interventions for "Under the Waterline"

Throughout this series, many areas have been discussed.  You may be thinking where do I begin?  Working memory, visual, executive functioning, auditory processing and the list goes on.  Well, here are a few beginning steps.

Make sure there is a lasting reminder of anything you ask your child to do or remember.  It could be a visual schedule.  It may be as simple as a post-it-note with all the steps.

In everything, have your child(ren) do things with a sequential order.  Since a child reads left to right and top to bottom, encourage this is everything from puzzles to looking at books to playing a game.  This is a way to practice visual tracking skills and executive functioning skills.

Remember, if there is behavior or reactions such as, “ I can’t, I am bored with this or this is too hard” , it’s probably because of a communication or organizational deficit.  Communicate more simply and more visually.  Show him rather than tell him.  Break the task into it’s component parts.  Let him do part of the task.  Come back and do another part later.
