Sand - It is a Summer Thing

I have had so many reactions to sand. I have Thought ....I love it...it's a mess so avoid it at all costs. Sand is a great sensory experience. Think of it between your toes on the beach. Most children love to play in it. There is wet sand that sticks to us and dry sand that slides off on the beach. There are the construction digger toys at the park to dig into sand. Many families have a sandbox in the backyard. I did and I loved it as a kid.

The other side of sand is that it can be a pain cleaning up after everyone plays in it. It gets all over the bathtub. it seems like it is everywhere in the house if there is a sand pile in the yard. It can such an ordeal to cleanup after playing.

It is a great sensory experience for your child. As a mom who has a child who avoided lots of sensory activities, I had to orchestrate lots of tactile activities to desensitize him to them. I needed to get past the mess it caused and think about the positives it brought to my son. Not an easy task for a mom who hates to clean!

Whether you like sand or not, there is one thing all must agree. When an image of summer comes to mind, sand is usually present. It could be a picture of the beach, backyard or the park. It is just part of summer.

Enjoy it and help your child have some fun with sand this summer.
