IICorinthinans 1:3-9
4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort
6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer
7 And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.
Praise to our God who is the Father of compassion and of all comfort. Now that is a God who understands and acts on my behalf. I have to know that in times of sorrow. He comforts me in all my troubles. It is so reassuring that this comfort is not dependent on me but is available in all of my troubles!
We do share in the sufferings of Christ but also in the comfort of Christ. Paul tells this church in Corinth that he and his associates suffer for this church and the believers there. The suffering was far beyond their ability to endure. He goes on to tell them this happened that they did not rely on themselves but on God. Paul wanted all to be aware that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is the same power available to each believer in difficult circumstances. Not only that but God also sends comfort to the one struggling in difficult circumstances.
As each circumstance comes, and it will. It is important that God sends comfort and power to endure the trial!
