Life doesn't always go according to plan. There are snafus, changes and lots of unexpected difficulties. This is life! Most people learn to except this, adjust and adapt. How? By learning how to problem solve and come up with a new plan to tackle a less than ideal situation.. It's not so easy for a black and white thinker. There is a right way and if it doesn't go that way.....crisis ensues. The first thing that happens is an emotional reaction. He reacts first and thinks about solutions last. Actually he has little capacity to use cognitive abilities to think about much except about how "nothing ever goes right."
I am a big believer that most behavior problems begin as a thinking problem. An inflexible individual must have his thinking challenged on how he looks at life. He has to come to terms with the fact that things don't always go exactly the way he thinks they should. Snafus are a part of life and they must be accepted and dealt with constantly. If a student doesn't accept this fact of life there will be more outbursts. With these behaviors, there is little capacity to think through possible options even with adult assistance.
The student has to "buy in" to a better way to look at the these snafus. Once he is convinced there is a better way then he has the capacity to begin learning how to problem solve with some assistance.
