What is Love?

The Bible tells us that we love because He first loved us.  How does that work?   We only understand and can give love once we’ve experienced it firsthand.  We can only give out what we’ve first received.

Here is the bottom line.  God is the initiator of this love relationship toward us.  We respond to his initiation and the love He gives to us.  As we enter that relationship through faith in the God’s only son, Jesus, who took on the penalty of our sin so we wouldn’t have to bear it ourselves.  It was a love that was more than nice feelings.  It was demonstrative, full of action.  It was sacrificial.  It was at a great cost-the cost of God’s Son.

We experience that love, we see the sacrifice and the initiative God takes with us.  This is the example that teaches us what an active love is all about.  As we walk through life, God teaches us and empowers us to demonstrate what love is like.  It is impossible to give someone else something you don’t possess.  But with a relationship with Christ we can give what we possess.  As we seek to love those around us we do it with the love Christ has given us.

Happy Valentines Day.
