It's OK to Opt Out

Mom, you've almost made it through the school year.  That may be sad if it has been a good year at school.  There is nothing more reassuring for us special needs moms than to know things are going well at school.  There is a definite loss if this has been one of those easy years.  But if that's not your story, you will be glad to see it end.  I remember one year where I hung on to the verse "God gave them rest on every side."  This was given to the children of Israel as they entered the promise land.  I took it quite literally as a promise from God after one particularly difficult year.

You may be exhausted.  Remember, you are not called to do everything.  It's ok if you don't go to 30 graduation parties.  Yes, there may be a few that you feel strongly about attending.  Five parties is manageable but not 30.  Create the boundaries you need to do well in this busy season.  It is vital to create margins for yourself.  You never know when something will come up that requires some extra emotional energy.  If you have maintained some margins, you will have the reserves to manage it.  If you haven't, things are likely to unravel.  None of us wants that.

I have learned the hard way that I don't need to do everything to be a good mom, wife, daughter, friend or any other relationship. Enjoy life and prioritize what is important rather than what seems urgent.
