Making a List and Checking It Twice

A few of us may have our children out of school already but for the rest of us, it is going to happen soon and very soon. Are you ready? Some may say yes and others may say help? It is important to be organized. You registered for swim lessons, extra fruit snacks and popsicles have been bought and new swimsuits and shorts are in the drawers. But what else do you need to have a summer that will bring back good memories for a lifetime.

1. A "yes" face. Do your children see you as a mom who likes to be with her children. Or do they feel like they are a bother. This is an important question to ask yourself. You do have to be the mom and have rules but a "yes" face will make a huge difference in your summer.

2. Consistency is so important. You have to uphold the rules or the children become the CEO instead of you. Consistency is important in your responses each and everyday. Is mom calm or does she "fly off the handle" easily and often. The children don't know "what mom they will get today." If they can't predict how mom will respond, it's hard for them to know what is expected and how they should act.

3. Is mom all business or does she take a break from real life to have some fun? It could be turned intr a fun thing for the children to earn. Here are the things we need to get done before dad gets home. everyone draw one slip. Of paper out of this dish and do what's on the paper. Mom will help everyone if you get stuck but you have to try it before asking her for help. If everyone works together we can get done fast. if we are all done by 4, we'll go to the park for an hour. If we are done by 3:30 we can go to Dairy Queen and then to the park.

Remember, there is a lot to get done and teach children but there needs to be some fun mixed into the process.
