Key to Satisfaction

That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. Ecclesiastes 3:13

We are coming close to the end of our time in Ecclesiastes 3. There are only a couple more posts in this series. This has been a great series for me personally to meditate and try to digest all the meaning that is in this chapter. Today's verse, once again, has great truth. Let's dig into it now.

Each person eats and drinks. What does this mean? I believe it is talking about the normal everyday activities of life. A person must eat and drink daily to have strength, ability to think and solve problems that constantly arise. Eating and drinking are just a couple of the daily activities we do. There are so many more: caring for children and elderly parents, going to appointments, laundry, shopping and carpooling to name a few. This is all apart of our work.

The next portion of the verse says that we find satisfaction in our toil. Really? I'm not suppose to view work as a necessary "evil"? I know many people who see work as drudgery and live to make it to the next weekend, holiday or vacation. This verse tells us that work or toil is a place we can find satisfaction. How? Finding satisfaction in our work is a gift from God! The person who finds satisfaction in his work knows it's a gift. It is not something that more time working brings. It down'the happen by thinking or worrying about work. It isn't even what hard work brings. It is a gift from God. Our verse today makes it very plain.

You may ask, how do I receive this gift of satisfaction? First, recognize that God has a time for everything. Acknowledge God's sovereignty in your life. Once you have affirmed who God is as creator, sustainer and loving father, relinquish the control of your life. In reality, He always is in control but He desires each of his children to be just that, a child who depends on his/her father without trying to control all the circumstances. Finally, pray that God will give you this gift of satisfaction in your work and watch what God does. Remember, He loves to reward those who earnestly seek Him!
