An Unlikely Model For Communication

Let's continue our discussion on communication and behavior. Here are a few suggestions teaching your child to use the family's new washer. This is real life at our house. We had a new washing machine delivered today.

I was thrilled with the directions. It has such detail that I am sure a person with communication and language deficits could figure how to operate the machine on his own. Why? The language is concise and clear. There are detailed visuals that show a person what to do and how to do it.

Here are some directions in the manual.

I love the fact that the steps are numbered with a visual representation of each step. There are consise directions. The reader/learner has enough information to operate the machine with out being overly wordy. Too many words often causes more confusion.

If there is confusion, each step of operation has another page that goes into more detail, if needed. If you look at the graphic for #1, it is a laundry basket. The directions beside it in the manual says, "Sort laundry and load washer." There is a separate page that gives more information about how to sort clothes. Things are included about checking pockets before loading in the washer. They may seem too detailed for some people but it's perfect for teaching a child or those who have organizational and planning difficulties.

When preparing materials to teach your child a new skill, LG Appliances have given a great model. Use visuals, concise but complete directions and create a detailed list for component parts that make up each step of the general directions.
