Behavior Basic #10 Limit Access to Technology

Are you struggling with children who only want technology.  You would like them to expand their interests beyond technology, right?  Well, it isn’t likely to happen without a strategy.  First of all,  institute a “you have to earn it” policy.  Technology access isn’t a civil right.  There is nothing wrong with making your child earn time on technology. This isn’t likely to be popular but will help you use it as a reward for on task behavior.  Expect some conflict but it should allow you to see improvement in some other areas.  Also, it gives you an opportunity to introduce non-technology activities.  The child might be given a very liberal amount of time to participate in the non-technology activities.  Expanding interests in a child who is a rigid thinker will take a lot of effort.

I’ve used technology rewards to get the morning routine done independently, homework completed with no reminders, quick transitions, tone of voice and similar tasks and behaviors.  Charts are great.  Get a picture of the reward and post it on a chart or at a prominent place to keep your child motivated for the reward.
