Routines in 3 Simple Steps

" Today, is the first day of the rest of the rest of your life." This was a slogan that was popular when I was growing up. Developing routines in your home is a new step you can make today for 2015. Routines are good for all of us but are vital for young children and those who have a lot of anxiety. Routines help them understand what is coming next. The first step is developing a schedule. It's hard to teach the steps of a routine if a child doesn't know she is suppose to "get ready for school." The routine is all the steps it takes to be able to leave the house before going to school.

I love a quote by Albert Einstein. "If I can see it, I can understand it." Schedules and routines will be more meaningful and understood if they are visual. This means, for most children, pictures and words should be displayed. It should be posted where it is needed. Posting it helps insure that it is available to be used at the moment it's needed.

Śtep 1: Create a schedule

Step 2: Create routines for each schedule item

Step 3: Teach and follow routines

That sounds easy but is it? It can be after you get into a groove with routines. We will look at how to accomplish each of these steps over the next few weeks. I'm looking forward to making this journey as we learn to use routines to help children lower anxiety and increase appropriate behavior.
