The IEP meeting is coming. Are you ready? What is needed to be ready? Well, here are a few thoughts.
- Have copies of letters of any testing that has recently been done by providers outside of the school. Be ready to pass them out to everyone at the IEP Meeting.
-
Copies of letters written by private providers such as psychologist, SLP and OT with suggestions and the child's current needs.
- Have the outline or agenda of what you would like to discuss. Think through how all the paperwork, you are bringing, fit together. Prepare what you desire to communicate.
- Be prepared with questions for the school.
- Recognize that you will move forward but it may not be at as fast of pace as you would like. It may take more than one meeting to come to final agreement on the IEP. Try to keep expectations realistic.
- Prepare your heart before you go to the school. There is the balance between being a strong advocate and being a collaborative team player. This takes spiritual preparation to go into the meeting with the right attitude.
Alright, the time of preparation is coming to a close. Let's go. It's time for the advocating to begin!
