Staying on Track at IEP Meeting

Why use a parent agenda? It keeps you on track. A written agenda can help make sure you cover the basics with those who work with your child.

it doesn't need to be fancy. It needs to be written or digital. If it is visual reminder and in front of you, then you can use it and not forget anything.

The team is together and it is important that this time is used wisely and nothing is forgotten, How many times have I thought, "Oh no, I forgot to bring up extended year services. I really wanted to talk about that." It isn't easy to bring the IEP team together again. So, it was a missed opportunity. There will be things that don't happen but make sure that there is a better reason than, "I should of written a list but I forgot or never got around to it."

What things should be on the list? Now that's up to you but here are a few suggestions.

  • Show me some examples of daily work for each of the goals.
  • How could we manage this goal and define it more precisely?
  • I would like to see a social skills goal. What is the process to qualify for that?
  • What are some general education accommodations and assistance he could have access since he doesn't qualify for special education but needs help in this area?
  • Could I get a weekly parent/school sommunication email that outlines the activities for each goal area done that week? Could you give me the progress monitoring results for that week on this form?
  • Is progress monitoring done on the same day for each goal area?
  • Describe curriculum for each goal area.
These are just a few things to get some thinking started for a possible parent agenda, you may want to share the agenda with the team or use it as a guide for your comments. The choice is yours!
