Have you noticed that understanding time is so difficult for children with learning differences. Have you noticed that understanding time is so difficult for children with learning differences. Time is a very abstract concept and often it makes little sense to a child with learning differences. Let's take a look
60 seconds in a minute
60 minutes in an hour
Now, that's when the consistency ends
24 hours in a day
7 days in a week
52 weeks in a year
Oh, I almost forgot: 28 - 31 days in a month
12 months in a year
Wow, no wonder the concept of time is so difficult. A schedule and calendar makes life a little easier for this child. Why? The schedule helps a child predict what will come next. This is a precursor of understanding how time works. With a schedule, a child knows what to expect within a period time. Here are some options.
VISUAL SCHEDULE PLANNER APP by Good Karma Apps
CHOICEWORKS APP by BeeVisual
Both of these apps can be found at the Apple App Store
If you would prefer using non digital schedule there are websites that have free visuals that can be downloaded. The visuals should be laminated for durability and can be attached to a laminated paper/poster board with Velcro. Another approach would be to put magnets on the back of the laminated schedule pieces and but them on a portable magnetic white board.
A great website to get free schedule icons is https://www.setbc.org/pictureset/
If you have other types of schedules that have worked well, please share them in the comments section below.
