What's the Target?

Many of us have heard the expression "aim at nothing and you might just hit it." Without a target, it's hard to be motivated and self directed enough to move forward in the right direction. Without goals, it's hard to know what direction to go and it's even more difficult to get started. Goals help us start the ball rolling. I have written a lot of goals for my son as he was growing up. They usually fit into the following categories. Some of these categories may not fit you or the purposes of a home therapy program. Just decide what's best for your purposes.

  • Academic
  • Social
  • Therapeutic
  • Family
  • Spiritual
  • Life skills

There could be others but this always seemed like plenty. I usually wrote yearly goals for each area. These may be more specific to your home program.

Remember a goal is not the action plan or the action steps. A goal is an over arching principle to guide the plan.

  1. An academic goal might be: John will work on an academic deficit area and an area of strength or high interest during all in home therapy sessions.
  2. Therapeutic goal might be: Jane will work on one preferred or mastered activity from each area she receives therapy. She will also work on an emerging skill from each type of therapy.
  3. Life Skills. Jim will practice a mastered life/daily living skill and will work on a new and emerging skill during each home session.

Next week we'll look at the specifics needed in an action plan to make the goals a reality. The action plan will answer questions who, what, where, when, and how about the goals. It will outline specific steps to accomplish each goal.
