Reasons for Child's Rigidity

There are lots of reasons for a child's rigid behavior. It is helpful to understand these if you want help him grow and develop flexible thinking. Let's look at a few of these today.

  1. Lack of knowledge of how the world works. If understanding of the social world is not present, rigidity is likely to occur.
  2. Avoidance of anything that is uncomfortable.
  3. Transitioning from a preferred activity to a "less preferred" one. This takes different forms but all of them cause rigidity.
  4. Change in any form.
  5. Personal anxiety about something, no matter how small.
  6. Not understanding what is happening or what is being communicated.

There are are other things that cause inflexible thinking with some children but these are some of the "biggies." There are ways to deal with each of these. Not every intervention will work with every child. That's why it is helpful to learn a few strategies for each of these. Many times a strategy may work today, but it falls flat the next day when dealing with a similar issue. Over the next few weeks, each reason for rigid thinking and behavior will be explored. A number of strategies will be shared. I would love to hear of strategies that work for your child.
