Waves of Loss

Do you remember the loss you felt in the weeks and months after receiving your child’s diagnosis.  I do.  I cried for 3 months. I seemed to move on and get going with the inventions we needed to use.

Well, that discouraging feeling of loss comes and pays a visit at times throughout your child’s life.  I’ve experienced it many times.  No school sporting events, never learning to ride a bicycle, no driving to school or church activities (at least yet).  Another wave of loss is coming over me as I write.  My son graduates from high school this year.  There will be no awards banquet, no athletic banquets, no school plays, no prom and no graduation open house.  Either they don’t apply or they would cause him more anxiety than it’s worth.

Our son has had a lot of wonderful experiences growing up.  He’s been fully included at  a Christian School for 13 years.  He’s been invited to birthday parties and sleep overs.  He’s gone to overnight camps many times very successfully.  He goes to a bible study with guys his age.  He has done quite well for a young man with an ASD diagnosis.  That doesn’t mean there aren’t losses that rear their ugly head from time to time.

When these waves come, know that you have a friend here who understands.
