Life Skill # 4 Hygiene

What does hygiene include?  Great question!  It really depends on who you ask?  Some things that are included is washing hands after going to the bathroom, taking a bath or shower and caring for hair and face. We will concentrate on the first one:  washing hands after going to the bathroom.  Sometimes this is a hard routine to instill in a child with learning differences.  If you have had a child who doesn’t want to take the time to wash his hands, you know how hard this is.   It seems like such a simple request but it can create a lot of conflict.

Make washing hands a non-negotiable.  Get through the fights over washing hands.  You may use incentive behavior charts or just make it a non-tolerance allowed activity.  Washing hands is just one of the sanitary practices that should be done by everyone no matter if the child enjoys it, or feels it’s necessary that a child do this… himself and for others.

We’ll look at some more hygiene issues in future posts.
